Arlington National Cemetery, USA

The initial idea about this post was quite different...since I thought I had never posted about the Arlington National Cemetery before (even though my gut feeling was telling me otherwise, but the tags on the left were like trying to prove me wrong).
Turns out I really really should trust those gut feelings of mine...cos they just prove to be right...and the reason why i overlooked the Arlington tag here was cos I was looking for it under Washington D.C and not under Virginia as the other Alrington post is...but these cards can be sooo confusing sometimes...cos both that are shown here, bear the name of Washington D.C on the back...tsk tsk tsk...what a mislead!!
Well, frankly I was too lazy to search and scan and upload something else, so here we have two cards of the Arlington National Cemetery...this time under the tag of both Virginia and Washington D.C..but dear USA postcard printing companies, please make up your mind on such issues in the future so to avoid such confusions...thank you very much

US-1766404

Both cards arrived in 2012...the first one as an official...the text on the back reads:

Arlington Mansion and 200 acres of ground immediately surrounding it were designed officially as a military cemetery June 15 1864, by Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton. More than 260,000 people are buried at Arlington Cemetery. Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried in the cemetery, from the American Revolution through the Persian Gulf War and Somalia. Pre-Civil War dead were reinterred after 1900.

the three smaller stamps I guess are more than familiar...the bigger one doesn't appear so often on my mail..theYear of the Dragon stamp issued in 2012.

the other one arrived from Swantje for the WOTM lottery...boy, that seems to have been so so long ago!!
Again, from the backside: The Memorial Amphitheater at Arlington National Cemetery was dedicated on May 15, 1920 (here is that tricky word 'dedicated' again...thanks to Bryon for the prior clarification!))
While many ceremonies are conducted throughout the country, many consider the services at Arlington's Memorial Amphitheater to be the nation's official ceremonies to honor all American service members who serve to keep the United States free.

some more nice stamps! (incl. the American Clock and the Toleware)...Here you can also see the nice Bonsai stamp from the set of 5 Bonsai Tree stamps issued in 2012, with this one showing the Black Pine. The other one is the Neon Celebrate stamp issued in 2011.

so, that would be all for today folks...hope you had a nice summer in general, and you are now ready to embrace the lovely autumn days and their beautiful colours!

Stay well!

Stonewall Confederate Cemetery, USA

Last card for today comes from the USA...and it is cemetery...again...yay! =)

From the back of the card (one thing I love about US cards is that they often have some description/story about the card on the back): Winchester was a strategic military prize during the Civil War. With excellent roads to the north and the east, it was a serious threat to the supply lines of the Union armies when the Confederates took control. An estimated 3,000 Confederate troops are laid to rest here at Stonewall Confederate Cemetery.
Robin, who sent me this card for the North American RR, says that she also enjoys visiting cemeteries. It is nice to know I am not the only one who finds such places beautiful :)

Familiar stamp I guess :)

Wishing you all a great Sunday..and I guess most of you are having the last Christmas preparations as well. I doubt I'd be able to post in the next two days, so would like to use this opportunity to wish a Merry Christmas to all my readers who are celebrating it now in December :)

Arlington, USA

Dorin sent me this lovely cemetery card...i dont often get cemeteries, so it's always nice to add one to my collection.

This is the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia...

Founded in 1807, the nation's first national cemetery is built on land originally belonging to the Lee family. It is a shrine to the thousands of men and women who have died to keep America free. Interred here are John F. Kennedy and his wife, Jacqueline, John Philip Sousa, J.Edgar Hoover and Matthew Brady. Inserts from top right: "Iwo Jima" Marin Corps Memorial; Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Kennedy Grave's Site.

Ok, apart from Kennedy, i dont really know the others....I thought that Matthew Brady rang a bell, but when i googled him, turned out that i havent heard of him before....well, you live you learn...

thanks Dorin again for the great card!

Richmond, USA

I really love this unusual-shaped card, sent to me by dear Chrissy.

Here is Richmond, Virginia's Capitol...and this building is the State Capitol Complex...well, not a very inventive name :)
In the heart of downtown, east of 9th Street, between Broad and Main, where squirrels play beneath the many magnolia trees, the Virginia State Capitol Complex exemplifies the "Old South" and provides a refreshing contrast to the "New South" business district surrounding it.

and here are some lovely stamps, where apart from the famous Simpsons guys, you have two additional ones, a fox and a bear...if you ever get to have some spare bear card, you can send one to Chrissy since she is a bear-lover, and  a card like that would make her super-happy :)
Oh, and if you wonder why so many stamps for a single card...it actually came in an envelope along with a long letter and two other cards...and some stickers...:)

thanks for the great Chrissy...I hope you are doing ok, and we miss you :)

Virginia, USA

My last card for today comes from my dear Chrissy .....
Well, Chrissy knows i love flag cards, so she thought i will maybe like this one...well, there is never a miss with flag cards for me ;)
Well, since the back of the cards are somewhat smarter than me (sometimes) ill tell you what it says :))

VIRGINIA

A deep blue field contains the seal of Virginia, with the Latin motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" - "Thus Ever to Tyrants". Adopted in 1776. The two figures are acting out the meaning of the motto. Both are dressed as warriors. The woman, Virtus, represents Virginia. The man holding a scourge and chain, shows that he is a tyrant. His fallen crown symbolizes his loss of authority over commonwealth. Eight U.S Presidents came from Virginia.

Chrissy, have you maybe considered to run for one as well?? You'll have my support :)
And thanks a million for the card...its just perfect for me! :)

Virginia, USA

I got this card from Chrissy along with her Valentine card Flamingo....and its my first one ever from Virginia! And it has a lighthouse on it!!

Chrissy is one of the newest people i met at the GTKY but its been really nice to know her...for some reason only nice and kind and awesome people come at the GTKY :)
And Chrissy is the one who wholehearedly helps me with my German...she says her German is rusty...i say mine is awful and way too basic...but it feels good to be able to practice the language with someone, with whom i can just give it a try into writing something without really worrying if im gonna make too many mistakes or if im gonna say enough or a lot or anything...my German lessons themselves are a total different story...but ill leave that up for my following German card.
However, Chrissy, Vielen Dank für alles! :)
