Bodie Island Lighthouse, USA

ok, one more card for today, and hopefully I'll manage to write this post as well, cos blogger has been playing some tricks on me all night long...grrrrrrrr!!!

Robin sent me this lovely lighthouse for the new edition of the Choose a Country RR. It shows the Bodie Island Lighthouse in North Carolina, and as the back of the card says: During the Civil War, in 1861, Confederate troops slipped into the Bodie Island Lighthouse and blew it up. Rebuilt by 1872, the existing Bodie Island Lighthouse is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The old keeper's house is open as a visitor's centre and museum.

So if you are nearby, go for a visit =)

well-known stamp :)

so that would be all for today...see you next time :)

Ocracoke Lighthouse, USA

Here is a North Carolina lighthouse

from the back of the card: "Built in 1823 on Ocracoke Island near the reputed hideout of the pirate Blackbeard, Ocracoke Lighthouse is one of the oldest active lighthouses on the East Coast."
It was built it in 1823 by Noah Porter and is 23 m. tall. Its diameter narrows from 8 m at the base to 3.7 m at its peak

the US postal service seemed to be lazy when instead of a stamp used this sticker.

North Carolina, USA (03)

My last card for today is a map of North Carolina, but different from the one I already have :)

Here are some of the basic facts from the back of the card:
State Capital: Raleigh
State Tree: Long Leaf Pine
State Flower: Dogwood
State Bird: Cardinal
Highest Point: Mount Mitchell, 6.684 feet
Largest City: Charlotte  (hi Lotte! :))
Area: 48.843 square miles
Statehood: Nov.21, 1789 (12th state admitted)
State Motto: Esse quam videri (To be rather than to seem)
State Song: The Old North State

yeah, i know youve already known most of these from my previous card, but the information are not EXACTLY the same...and its not bad to have this as a reminder ;))))
Btw, i dont know if its a virus or something, but ive caught some sort of a cold, a sore throat and some kind of a palate infection...where did this all come from, i dont know....but i hope it goes away soon coz it feels bad and annoying...coz i cant eat neither swallow without feeling a real pain...
ok...that would be it for today :)

North Carolina, USA (02)

And another totally unexpected, surprise card, from dear Gaby....well, that comment at the post about Vienna did reveal something, but it something i didnt expect at all....more over, its according to my tastes, coz it shows lighthouses....thank you Gaby a whole bunch! :)

You know...when i got into this postcard-exchange thing, i actually got into it with the idea to send/receive cards only....i didnt have the slightest idea i would get to know such nice people with whom i would actually have contact beyond postacrds only...i guess thats why i got even more addicted to this postcard thing, coz postcards sent from those people have a greater depth than just a postcard only...i think you know what i mean...
Thank you all...you know who you are! :)

North Carolina Lighthouses

For centuries, lighthouses have been erected to protect ships and guide them safely away from low shoals. Each lighthouse has individual markings, making it readilly identifiable from a distance. Advancements in technology have made the lighthouse obsilete, but most are open to the tourists and visitors, providing a historic view of times gone by.

North Carolina, USA

A map card!! On a blue background!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!! Perfect choice Gaby! :)

lets see the facts the back of the card has:

Area: 52.700 square miles
Capital: Raleigh
Nickname: The Tar Heel State
Motto: Esse quam vider - To Be, Rather than To Seem
Song "The Old North State" by Judge William Gaston
Flower: Dogwood
Tree: Pine
Bird: Cardinal
Shell: Scotch Bonnett
Fish: Channel Bass
Insect: Honey Bee
Colours: Blue & Red
Gemstone: Emerald

So far, this card definitely contains the most info out of all the other map cards i have...i mean, it has 'shell, insect, colour and gemstone' on the list.

State's motto is clear, i just needed to google for 'dogwood' coz i am somewhat not that flower-names friendly person, and unless its a tulip, rose, violet, lilac or something quite common, i can get rather stuck....

Regarding the state's nickname, the exact etymology is quite unknown but most experts believe its roots come from the fact that tar, pitch and turpentine created from the vast pine forests were one of North Carolina's most important exports early in the state's history.

Now, while you still here....uhm, well, i hope you are, take a look at Gaby's Project, read the idea behind it, read the rules as well and if you are interested, then just submit your entry :)
