Bonneville Salt Flats, USA

ahhh don't get me started on what my mailbox went through today! I blame it on Bryon....who also launched this one from Salt Lake City few months ago...

Several miles east of Wendover is the Bonneville Salt Flats. It is the site of the famed Bonneville Raceway, the fastest automobile course in the world for many years. Pictured here are four of the old cars that raced the course years ago (- from the back of the card).

You call these old cars??? Seriously??!! They look like something from the latest Star Trek movie to me :D :D :D I mean, these are just awesome! It may not be Formula 1, but I just love these! So cool! And speaking of F1, Bryon says that Honda had brought their F1 car here to test its speed of 355km/h  so...

three nice stamps, all issued in 2015 - Elvis has some baby-face on this one (the picture was taken in 1995)..it is part of the Music Icon series of stamps...then you have the penguins on the left...and Paul Newman on the right...a stamp issued to commemorate 90 years since his birth... well, at least that's what the years logically suggest..boy he is so handsome on this stamp! It is a picture taken in 1980.

Thank you thank you Bryon! :))))))

Salt Lake Temple, USA

beautiful official card! I LOVE the colour of the sky, and the white-blue contrast...and I love the reflection of the Temple in the water in front of it!

US-2254864

The special thing about this official card is that it is from dear Katie, whom I've known for a long while and who used to be my penfriend as well (when I had the time for it..unfortunately as time went by I realized Im just not up for it..but that's a whole different story =)

Katie chose this lovely card for me, showing the Salt Lake Temple, at the centre of Temple Square, which took over 40 years to complete and was finally finished in 1893. The neo-gothic structure is open to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, and the detailed architecture, grounds and extensive surrounding attractions are free for public viewing. (from the back of the card)

and as a good friend who knows how much I love stamps, Katie did her best to put a bunch of them!
At the top right is a Forever stamp issued this year, showing Lydia Mendoza, one of the first and greatest stars of Tejano music. Next to it is another Forever stamp, this one issued in 2011, in a set of 16 Go Green stamps, where this one here promotes composting. And then, vertically you have three more stamps. The well-known American clock one, underneath is the Silver Coffeepot issued in 2007, and at the bottom is the American Toleware, also from the same set of definitives issued in 2007

The Subway, USA

I once posted a card from the Zion National Park. But this one is a must-see....it is just sooo beautiful!! I dont know if it's coz of the blue-predominant colour, but i totally adore this card!!

this is what the back of the card says:
Excavated by the Virgin River eons ago, Zion Canyon is a deep cavern in the earth showcasing fantastic rock formations in concert with water in motion. The Subway is a powerful example of this theme. The Subway is so named for its tube-like, undercut slot canyons. This segment of canyon is less than a quarter-mile in length, but long approach and exit hikes are necessary for access.

Tina always sends such great cards for her RR groups!! Thank you so much Tina!

the stamp shows the famous Grand Teton...but the cancellation is just fantastic!!

Utah, USA

My last card for today comes as an official...and speaking of them, im really annoyed with it, coz all my cards are either stuck travelling or go expired...or end up with people who just decide to stop logging in AFTER i get their address.....urghhhhhhhhh

US-530683

has a great text on the back, so im gonna use it, of course :)

Panorama Point

Capitol Reef, located in the slickrock country of southern Utah, takes its name from pioneers who saw the imposing rock ridge as a travel barrier, similar to an ocean reef. The reef is capped with golden sandstone domes, one of which resembles the U.S Capitol Dome. Capitol Reef is part of the Waterpocket Fold, a narrow, 100-mile-long rock formation that is one of the largest monoclines in North America's surface. Many rounded depressions pockmark the Fold; these "pockets" hold life-giving water after a storm, hence the Waterpocket Fold. A short walk to Panorama Point yields a breathtaking view of Capitol Reef.

This actually a huge panoramic card, but unfortunately, i dont think you are able to notice that from here

familiar stamp...

Zion National Park, USA

The shape of these rocks has always been of a great interest to me...
I got this card back in 1996 from my penpal Leen Frenssen who went to the US to visit her sister who was an exchange student.

This canyon overlook trail in Zion National Park leads to a spectacular view down pine creek to the west temple. Navajo sandstone, the cemented remnants of ancient dunes creates the intricately carved foreground.
(from the back of the card, of course)

Utah, USA

Im slowly, but certainly making a nice progress in getting map cards...at least from the US states...apart from the already published...i still have...hmmm, 2 or 3 more ;-))

Lets see what Utah has to say....

State Capitol: Salt Lake City
Settled by: Mormon Pioneers
Entered the Union as: 45th state, Jan. 4 1896
Area in Square Miles: 84.916
Population: approx. 1,200,000
Nickname: The Beehive State

You've probably noticed that i dont always include the same information about map cards...that is coz i actually write down the info which is on the back of the cards and they are not always the same....in addition i may add something else

The state's motto is: Industry (?!)

I couldnt find why thats the state;s motto, i guess someone living in Utah could hop in here, but regarding the state;s nickname, it says that during the settlement period, a certain Mr. Young, had an expansionist's view of the territory he and the Mormon pioneers were settling, calling it Deseret - which church founder Smith had taught meant "honeybee" - hence the beehive which can still be found on the Utah flag.
