Korkyra Lighthouse, Croatia

It took me a while to figure out which lighthouse this is since the card bears absolutely no information - and after some extensive googling, seems like I have nailed it! I didn't dare bother Agi during the festival for such a trivial question :D

This is the Korkyra lighthouse (a very cool and for me, unusual name for something located in Croatia) built in 1871 on the island Vela Sestrica in south part of Pelješac channel.
As you can see, from the card, there are rooms as well which indeed you can rent, for around 460 euros per person per night, and in return you should get some peace and quiet - yeah, tranquility does come at a certain price unfortunately...

the stamp is from a set of 4 featuring castles in Croatia - this one shows the Mailáth castle in Donji Miholjac, considered one of the most well preserved castles in Croatia.

Zagreb, Croatia

next comes Zagreb at the end of June...and the amazing edition of InMusic Festival...

I don't know if it is still too early, but so far Im kinda not impressed with this year's line up....I am like all the time praying for Sigur Rós to be announced since they will already be on tour at that time, and they will mostly be playing at music festivals, so it is kinda logical that the guys from InMusic should try and bring them to Zagreb....but so far, they are not even giving any indications for such a possibility even though people, including me, have posed the question...so far, what has excited me the most was yesterday's announcement of Django Django coming (a cool British rock band)...and for that I would consider going...other than that, some of the cool artists that will be playing are Wilco and PJ Harvey, but still not that good enough to take that 800 km something road...though now with Django Django, it may be considered...anyways, this post should be about last year, not this one :)

So first of all, Id like to wholeheartedly thank Agi for making me company during the last InMusic...she was like the perfect company and it just contributed to the greatness of the entire festival.
It was also my first sleeping-in-tent experience (yeah, I know it is kinda strange I haven't done it yet, but there goes my tent-virginity...) and it is something I'd do it again (well I already did it actually last August when I went mountain climbing, but that is a completely different story  and cannot compare the two).

it is a fantastic surrounding to camp at, dont you think?

and after trying to figure it out for a while..

we were set! voila!!

Anyways, the festival lasted three days, so it was three nights in the tent...and the first and the third one were ok...but oh my the second...that one is unforgettable...to me at least....even though the first day was all sunny and warm, things drastically changed during the second while we were in town...it started raining and there was this wind blowing and we were of course under equipped so we started freezing and were desperate to find some cheap umbrella or a rain coat, but guess what - all rain coats were like sold out..so at last we got into H&M and even though I am the anti-shopping kind of type, this time I felt like blessed and found this sweater for like 3 euros that felt so welcoming on my skin...I still wear it today, it is a nice one...now if we did get through the day, the night was a different issue...I think that I put on all the clothes I had with me, but it was just impossible to warm up...impossible....I think I barely slept that night...well, my mistake, didnt bring any mattress for underneath the sleeping bag...but then again,  I didnt really expect the temperatures would drop down so much that day....
Third day was good...the sun came out and everything felt different....and music-wise it was also a fabulous one, so the whole rain, freezing thing was like just forgotten...

Chillin' out with some JJ Cooler if I recall correctly (Agi discovered this one and it was really cool!)

The very main reason I decided to go to the last edition of InMusic were Placebo...and they played the very last like for closing the event...and boy were they awesome...awesome!!! I even managed to get myself in the very first row and was like aaaaahhhhh....yeah, I always do that at concerts...if it aint first row, doesnt count :) And Brian Molko is still one of the most charming and charismatic men out there....and yes, they played "Running Up that Hill" - even though it is a cover song (Kate Bush sings the original...sorry Kate, but Placebo beat you to this one)

yes, his majesty, Mr. Brian Molko

me after it was over...and there were fireworks marking the end of the 10th InMusic Festival

So as I said, Placebo were absolutely fantastic...but if it wasnt for them or if I was not so biased maybe, I would have announced the appearance of Of Monsters and Men as the absolute best - an Icelandic indie folk band that sounds sooo powerful on stage, cannot find the words to express that...so if you ever get the chance to watch them live, I ABSOLUTELY recommend it...they are just way too amazing!!
Another appearance worth mentioning from Day 3 would be the Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - kinda pity I haven't listened to them much before but gave them more credit once I got back home...

As for the other two days - day one started with Paulo Nutini....Scottish guy with some Italian origin...found out about him before the festival, gave him a listen and loved it...and yeah, a great appearance on stage, great voice, charming guy...he played my favourite, Iron Sky...downside, he didn't play "Diana" but I may be asking too much...
Another band for that night which I learned about prior the festival and loved them...and which proved to be awesome, "Future Islands"...an American synth-pop band which have something so unique in their sound and stage appearance and that is so haunting and so catchy...one of those bands that I regret not having discovered earlier (they've been around like since 2006 and I discover them almost 10 years later =[

In the end I will mention FFS (or Franz Ferdinand and the Sparks) - they were like headliners I think but FFS is NOT the same as FF...it just isn't =/ I don't wanna say I was disappointed cos I didn't have expectations on this one, but it is like they have the popularity based on the good old glory days...

After all those concerts, Agi and I went to this Silent Music party that turned out so cool! You know, you have these headphones with like four different music stations and you choose which one you like most and you like dance and sing to it...but of course nobody listens to the same thing and everyone moves in his/her own rhythm...kinda really cool....well now there were groups of people that were singing altogether but still...loved the concept...too bad we couldn't do it the other two nights...but on the second night after having frozen during the day I wasn't really much into it...

Speaking of Day 2, I'd mention Death Cab For Cutie (aside from Placebo, another reason I decided to go to InMusic, since I've been listening to them for ages)....and you know,  everything kinda fit together that night...with the rain falling, their music and lyrics were just right...and you have this slow music and the rain falling on your face...though they have some strange lyrics..I mean who else would sing something like
'Love of mine, some day you will die' or
'But I'm thinking of what Sarah said that "Love is watching someone die" So who's going to watch you die?..'
I don't know where that obsession of love and death comes from...kinda wicked and creepy, but I still say they are a fantastic band...

But most importantly, they played "Transantlanticism" - that is like my all time favourite by them and I almost cried when they played it....oh and I ended up with a guitar-pick as a souvenir :D

ok, apart from the festival, we spent some time in the city as well, and this was when Agi showed me the beauties of Umami - an awesome Asian-Fusion restaurant...delicious food and reasonable prices!

wondering if Id know how to eat with chopsticks (that is the sweater that saved me btw =))

yummie!! yummie! yummie!!

and then there was this great pancake place (Milky whey or something) but the pancakes were awesome...and so rich that I didn't manage to finish mine....I tried, but I just couldn't...

and the great cakes at Amelie and the kind people working there (I think I will tell you that story in some future post cos I already talked way too long here, Im kinda sure I lost you somewhere on the way :))

so, as with all good things, this one came to an end..but hoping for a new edition this summer

farewell...

*bonus photo and the million dollar question, what the hell was I doing here...

I don't know how relevant the stamp would be after so much rambling, but it is a lighthouse, so I cannot not mention it (yeah, Agi took me to the philately shop so I could choose some nice stamps for the cards ;-)

It is from the set of 4 lighthouse stamps issued in 2015 - this one shows the Grebeni lighthouse.

Photo credits within this post go to Agi! Big hug to her for letting me use them here :*

huh, I seriously need a break before moving on to Turkey...and I actually started all this two days ago...

Bjelovar, Croatia

a lovely surprise card I received from Hrvoje and Ekaterina!

I have the impression that when it comes to Croatia, I'm more inclined to post something related to the coastline places or islands, and unintentionally ignoring the rest, which is neither fair neither I have some reason for it...so to make up for it, here is a card from the Croatian town of Bjelovar where you can see some images from a festival called Terezijana, organized each June in the memory of Maria Theresa (not Mother Theresa) who was the only female ruler of the Habsburg dominions and the last of the House of Habsburg and had been the sovereign of Austria, Hungary, Croatia, Bohemia, Mantua, Milan, Lodomeria and Galicia, the Austrian Netherlands and Parma.
She is said to have laid the foundations of the town of Bjelovar in 1756, thus this festival is being organized each year.

the two stamps are from set of four Ehtnographic heritage stamps  issued in 2010, where the regions of Primorje and Međumirje are represented.

thanks a lot to Hrvoje and Ekaterina for thinking of me and sending me this card :)

Solaris Hotel Resort, Croatia

So, if you are still reading me, and havent pressed the X button on your browser after the previous post, lets go on with a few more cards :)

before i go on actually, i need to tell you that this and the following three cards suffered my clumsiness and my spilling over a glass of lemonade with honey...thank God it was not coffee, so we dont have dark stains here, but you can notice that the cards have undergone something...I dont know how the Nagorno Karabakh card managed to stay intact, being it is all on my desk (real mess)...but im thankful for it...however, what suffered is my laptop actually (luckily i had my office laptop with me during the weekend, so I could use that one for now). But I dont know if mine can be fixed or not...starting from the down arrow, which was the first one to start acting weird, in the end, the entire keyboard went crazy...so we'll see if that can somehow be cleaned or if my dear laptop may not have such a nice destiny...if you have any experience on this, you can share...I mean, it has happened to me many times to spill over something over my desk, but usually it was the desktop keyboard, which is easy to be replaced, plus it is very cheap...but with laptops it is a whole different story, so i really dont know what to think....

oh, ok, the card, yes...this is another surprise card that came from Nenad...and shows a scene of the Solaris Hotel Resort in Šibenik, Croatia. Usually cards showing hotel resorts are boring buildings and benches...but this one is totally different...reminds me more of some amusement park than of a hotel.

I found this nice video compilation so Ill let it speak instead of me, since ive never been here so to be able to share my own experience and impressions and all....

boy, id love one of those massages right now....

the stamp is from a set of 4 issued in 2011, representing Croatian castles, and on this one you can see one in the town of Našice.

hvala ti puno Nenade!!! Baš bi da zduvnem sad negde na moru kad bi mogla....

Poreč, Croatia

ive posted a number of Croatian cards here, but not one from Poreč....so here it is...

I got this card from dear Rumi, back in 2009, when I more actively participated in RR's.
Well, despite the weather has been really nice here lately, sunny and not so warm...I do long for something like this...the sea (esp. the Adriatic one) is irreplaceable to me..and it is really helpful for the overall state of mind to relax by the sea for a few days...well, i relaxed by the Mediterranean this summer, for a day and a half...and even though it felt great, it just wasnt enough = /

Ive been trying to recall my visits to Croatia from when I was little, but I dont think ive ever been to Poreč actually...and now ive just read that the city has a UNESCO whs as well, the Euphrasian Basilica...i have to dig through my Croatian collection and see if i actually have this...though i think the answer is no, but I really have no idea anymore about what I have and what I dont...and I stared hard at this picture, but i didnt manage to spot the Basilica...well, had to try :)

im not sure how much you can see the label....it has withered away with time...just pity that the postal workers didnt bother much to use stamps....

thank you Rumi for the great card!

Marija Bistrica, Croatia

A card I received back in 2009...

the card shows Marija Bistrica, which is considered as a famous pilgrimage place since here an old Marian shrine of the Black Madonna is located. During religious holidays this place is packed with people, coming from many different places and in 1998 Pope John Paul II visited this place and beatified the Croatian Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac.

no cancellation on the stamp unfortunately....the stamp was issued in 2005, showing the Croatian town of Rijeka.

thanks a lot to dear Rumi for this card!  And sorry for not posting it earlier....

Osijek, Croatia

A very nice card from Osijek received in....*cough cough*....2008.....yeah, I know, im awful!

I already wrote something about Osijek here. This card was also sent by Goran, I just wonder if he remembers at all he had sent this to me since it was so long ago :)

This card shows the Church of St Peter and St Paul, the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Đakovo-Osijek. The church was built in 1898 and is one of the city's landmarks.
Wikipedia gives some trivia about this church which are as follows:

- This is the tallest building in Croatia outside of Zagreb.
- Capacity of the church during the mass is over 3000 people.
- The church is built of three and a half million bricks, and has a colored stone altars.
- The four tower bells weigh 2665 kg, 1552 kg, 740 kg. and 331 kg

If some of this info is wrong, I would like to ask Goran to kindly correct me, since as we all know, Wikipedia aint always the 100% reliable source out there.

The stamp on the card was issued in 2008, presenting the General Conference of International Amateur Radio Union Region 1 in Cavtat

Cavtat, Croatia

My last card for today shows Cavtat in Croatia.

Out of soo many Croatian cards, this is actually my very first one showing Cavtat...so thanks a lot to Goran for this perfect choice for my collection!
I regret not having used the chance last year to visit Cavtat too, but went only to Dubrovnik...when Cavtat is actually before Dubrovnik (and is the nearest Croatian city to the border with Montenegro I think), so it is not like it takes any extra hours to go further and back, when the city is already in the way...but oh well, hope  I learn from my mistakes and use a chance next time...ive been to Cavtat before...but I was a child back then so I dont really remember anything...
The modern Croatian name for the city reveals the ancient origins and the link with Dubrovnik. Cavtat is a derived from Civitas Vetus, that means "old city" in Latin.

the stamp is from this year's set of 4 stamps representing Croatian Ethnographic heritage and this one portrays Medimurje.

Well, stay tuned until next time...whenever I get the chance to make that happen :)

Mulo, Croatia

Dear Agi sent me this lovely lighthouse

From all my visits to Croatia back in time, unfortunately I cant recall if I had seen their lighthouses...I know ive seen lighthouses for real SOMEWHERE, but no way I could remember where it was...
This one shows the Mulo island and lighthouse...situated near Rogoznica and Planka promontory. Mulo is one of the oldest Croatian lighthouse, which was built by the navy Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in 1873, just near Rogoznica's sea surface. It was equipped by cranes for lifting wooden fishing boats which saught the rescue during storms. During one thunderstorm in the last century, early 70's, a cargo ship, chock full of tropical fruits ran aground the lighthouse Mulo. Eye witnesses claim that marketplaces in Rogoznica, Šibenik and Split have been settled with oranges for months ! But along with Mulo's garrison the legends about it also vanished.

a few lovely colourful stamps...the first two come from a set of 5 issued in 2008, representing Croatian Ethnographic Heritage (the one on the left shows a Folk costume from Sunja, while the other one shows a Folk costume from Bistra)..the stamp next to it (along with the tab) is also from 2008, it is a commercial stamp regarding the 20 Years of the Healthy Cities Movement in Europe.

Prišnjak, Croatia

An amazing view dear Agi surprised me with
And to be honest, this was the first time I heard about Prišnjak...*blush*...
The lighthouse Prišnjak is situated in the isle of Prišnjak. It was built in 1886 so the vessels would navigate more easily through the Murter archipelago during the night. The isle has dry stone wall all over the surface. Some wild figs, pines and some low bushes can be found there. By boat you can cruise around nearby isles. The lighthouse is located six NM away from the National Park Kornati. Lighthouse building is made of stone and it is only 15 metres from the sea. There is a big terrace with the fireplace that can be used as barbeque and a small mooring place for boats. Prišnjak is one of the lighthouses without a Keeper and is completely automated. Isolation is guaranteed since you probably will not come across a straying tourist here.... .
Since the isle has very high temperature values you can swim there until November.

the stamp itself is also showing a lighthouse, coming from a set of 3 issued in 2009. Here you can see the Stražica lighthouse.
Hvala ti puuuuuunoooo Agi!!!

Krka, Croatia

Here is a really great card sent from Roberto, and it actually came as an official..my first official from Croatia :)
 HR-10109

The card shows the National Park Krka (which shouldnt be mixed with Krk, the famous island). The first idea that comes to my mind when it comes to Krka are medicine and cosmetics....but that is actually related to Slovenia, not Croatia. The famous and so tasty Pikovit syrup comes from that company, as well as a number of sun and facial creams, shampoos.
As for Krka in Croatia, it is a National Park located in Dalmatia, named after the Krka river. It was proclaimed a national park in 1985 and is intended primarily for scientific, cultural, educational, recreational, and tourism activities.

Due to its special position and the mosaic distribution of various types of habitats, it is characterized by exceptionally rich and varied flora and fauna.
Eight hundred and sixty species and subspecies of plants have been identified within its territory including several endemic Illyrian-Adriatic species.
As for the fauna, eighteen species of fishes inhabit the Krka River, among which ten are endemic, making the Krka a natural landmark of the highest category.

the stamps are great as well...the bear one on the left, and the one next to it in the middle, were issued in 2009. The bear stamp was issued to commemorate The 50th Anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child & 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the rights of the Child.
The stamp in the middle comes from a set of 3 depicting Fine Arts,Croatian Modern Painting in particular and on this one you can see the "Gray Sail" by Zlatko Prica.
As for the red stamps on the left, they were issued in 2008, in a set of 5 stamps portraying Croatian Ethnographic Heritage. The 1st one, on the left, shows Local Customs from Sunja, while the one next to it, Local Customs from Bistra.

Hvala ti puno Roberto! :)

Croatia

A very nice Croatian map...I love the sea image....brings such lovely memories....*sigh*

Well, apart from that, that you can see some of the most important Croatian places, you can also see what certain places are important for (regarding food, animals and crops for example)
I havent been to most of these places unfortunately...coz you know, when you go to Croatia, you focus on the sea-resorts, not much on whats inside the country, which is a pity....maybe if i get enough money, id get to see more of it (I also want to see some places in all the other ex-yu countries).
Funny, but when i look at the pictures of Dubrovnik and Varaždin, shown on the card, i realize I have the exact same postcards of those places :)
And i love those storks...and the wolf picture...and the bear one :)) And i wish it was summer and i was lying in the sun somewhere here by the Adriatic Sea....but no, its winter...and i dont even have snow to be joyous at....

the stamp is from 2007, from a series of 3, representing Croatian Cities.....where here, Omiš is represented.

Thanks Jelena for the lovely map card!!! :)

Zadar, Croatia

This has got to be one of the loveliest Croatian cards i have received!

I think that partly its coz of the way the sun reflects against the houses and the buildings...i LOVE the effect that outcomes from all that...then, there is the blue surrounding colour of the sea, and on top of that, a black frame around the card! just lovely lovely lovely! And a HUGE thanks to Goran for sending me such a card!
Personally i dont recall ever having been to Zadar (you know that the memories of my childhood visits to Croatia are sort of blurred). But from what i can see here, its a really nice city.
The entire district of present day Zadar has been populated since prehistoric times. The earliest evidence of human life comes from the Late Stone Age while numerous settlements have been dated as early as the Neolithic.  Before the Illyrians the area was inhabited by ancient Mediterranean people of pre-Indo European Culture. They assimilated with the Indo-Europeans who settled between the 4th and 2nd millennium BC into a new ethnical unity, that of the Liburnians. Zadar was Liburnian settlement, outlined materially in the 9th century BC, built on a small stone islet and embankments where the old city stands and tied to the mainland by the overflown narrow isthmus, which created a natural port in its northern strait.

the stamp was issued in 2005, under the title Croatian cities, representing the city of Rijeka.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

A card i bought this summer, on my one-day trip to Dubrovnik...last time i went there was when i was really little, so honestly i barely remember anything..so it was more than worth it to pay this visit....
As with most excursions, you get to see the historic places only, as in this case, we went to the Old City only....you dont have the time to wander through the rest of the city...but well, better something than nothing.
I must say that Dubrovnik is absolutely beautiful and has some charisma....compared to other touristic places ive visited, here the entire place just radiates with beauty...coming from all those beautiful people around...by this i mean people who capture you with their simplicity in their looks and behaviour, yet they are full of some modest dignity....smiling joyful faces all around...
the downside...its insanely expensive...postcards included.....so i couldnt really grab much...but i still bought a few for myself and maybe some to trade or give away...we'll see.
Another thing that will remain in my memories....the absolutely delicious ice cream which among other flavours, had a Mojito one as well...superb! Just that one scoop was 1 Euro worth...here i can get like 3 or 4 scoops for the same money, but truth is, its not the same ice-cream, and the scoops there were REALLY huge....personally, i ate 7.....first i bought 3, and then after i finished my sightseeing, i bought 4 more while waiting for the bus...i still dont know how my throat had survived :)
In Dubrovnik as with the most excursions, we were with a guide...but i left the group soon afterwards, since i felt as if i was waisting my time with him...some guides just have this thing to take you to places which are not of a greatest interest, and when you tell them you want to visit the City Walls (which are like a must-see when you visit Dubrovnik) he tells you that its tiring and you wont have time and blah blah blah....so of course, i left the group, got my ticket and went to the city walls...the only thing i regret is that i hadnt charged my camera batteries before i left, since after a while, they were empty, and i just couldnt take many pictures...still, im grateful for the ones i managed to make...ill show you some now, and ill leave some for another update....
I also bought myself two lovely mugs in Dubrovnik...and i almost bought a Depeche Mode T-shirt, which wasnt that expensive, but i thought to myself that i should be a bit more careful with my finances :)
Maybe Dubrovnik didnt bring so many memories, but certain parts of Croatia on the way did...like the resorts we went to each summer when i was little...i recognized this hotel we stayed at, but it was abandoned...yet the building was still there...summarized....i loved the trip and i loved Dubrovnik and would love to go back there...

the pictures...have to tell you that i LOVE my new camera...i just still need to explore loads of its options...but  I love it!!! Sony just doesnt let you down...

View of the Old City...we stopped for a few minutes in order to be able to take some pics since the photographing point was just perfect...

The typical narrow streets in Dubrovnik...they are just lovely...but from a touristic point of view...wouldnt want to reside there in any sense...it would feel as if you are living in a museum...people constantly passing by your door or window, lurking into your backyard...just no privacy....

My first 3 scoops of delicious ice-cream...Mojito...biscuits...coconut...

The Old City Fortress...

ahhh, memories memories....

Istra, Croatia

Here is a lovely map card portraying the Istra peninsula in Croatia.
Istra is the largest peninsula in the Adriatic Sea and is shared by three countries, Croatia, Slovenia and Italy...
I havent been to Croatia for many many years now, but if i could, i would change that....i was trying to associate each picture/name with something...and i can tell you ive definitely been to Opatija when i was little...I might have been to Pula and Rijeka as well, but thats only a wild guess, coz even if i have been there, i recall...nothing =|
I know ive come across Medulin somewhere, but i dont know if it was something i read about or i watched on TV (its scary how forgetful i had become...)
Rovinj always reminds me of some adverts we have here, esp. at the newsagents or some other booths...they say "Pozdrav iz Rovinja" or in English that would be "Greetings from Rovinj"...
And i know that Umag definitely reminds me of the tennis tournament held there...this year it will be from July 27th till August 2nd....its still not ranked among the highest tennis tournaments, and of course Nadal doesnt play there yet...but it is said that this year they are expecting to see the strongest bunch of players that have ever played in Umag, so maybe eventually Rafa will play there as well...while im ranting about tennis, i have to say im extremely glad that Serbia for the first time featured an ATP tournament this year too...its a 250 tournament, but i hope that with time it will improve...it would be a dream to watch Rafa play....live...:)

Šibenik, Croatia

Ive been feeling rather inspirationless these past two days...yet i feel 'obliged' to post something in here...i also have a bunch of things to do for work plus get some mail done and i feel as if its catching up with me and i cant meet the deadlines...plus i have had this awfully awful headache...and to be honest, i really have no idea why am i telling you all that...

I think ive never beeb to Šibenik, though at this point in life i cant exactly recall things which have happened over 20 years ago...ive been to a number of places in Croatia and Montenegro, and sometimes i just cant make a difference...should i be scared with how my memory works or is that pretty normal?  I could use some nice 500GB HD for my brain if possible...its a pity to lose some memories...
I like the architecture shown on this card (it has some Dalmatian character). And you can also see the cathedral of St. James...its at the very front of the card, so you cant miss it...
There are a number of famous people coming from Šibenik, but did you know that, that Goran Višnjić guy is also from here? That guy from ER...or that guy from Madonna's video, The Power of Goodbye?
Well...im not some TV addict, so i cant really give you many details, but knowing how much ER has been popular around the globe, im sure that at least half of you coming here, do know who i am talking about :)

ok ok, here he is, here he is :)

Goran 01     Goran 02    Goran 03

unfortunately, i couldnt get the Madonna video, since those Youtube guys have been censoring everything lately...but im sure you know it :)

Pula, Croatia

With Croatia's independence, and the breaking out of the war there (which was basically a war between the Croats and the Serbs), an end was put to our summer holidays in Croatia...a fact i had never got over. If there is something i feel so painfully attached  to, are my summers in Croatia...i dont know if its due to that thing in the air, or something else...but each time i think of them, i feel a lump in my throat, i feel how my heart squeezes itself, i feel pain for the things which have been and which will never come back....my childhood will never come back, and thats what i relate Croatia to...

Here on the card you can see one of the distinct sites of Croatia...the Arena Amphitheatre.
The Arena is the only remaining Roman amphitheater to have four side towers and with all three Roman architectural orders entirely preserved. It is the sixth largest surviving Roman arena and a rare example, among the 200 Roman surviving amphitheatres, of unique technological solutions. It is also the best preserved ancient monument in Croatia.
I wonder why it aint on the UNESCO whs list yet.....

Krk, Croatia

I have a number of postcards from Croatia, but this is my first one coming from Krk..

Krk is the name of a Croatian town, situated on the island of Krk.
The city is ancient and among the oldest in the Adriatic. It has been continuously inhabited since Roman times and was once part of the Byzantian Theme Dalmatia after the western empire had fallen to the barbarians. Roman ruins can be seen today in some parts of the town, for example mosaics in the houses.
The city was also once known for its unique Romance language called Vegliotic, which was spoken till the early 19th century.

Havent been here, but i would really love to one day...

Županja, Croatia

A RAS card i received from Goran in Croatia...

Županja is a city in eastern Slavonia, in Croatia, located 254 km east of Zagreb and it lies on the Sava river, opposite Bosnia and Herzegovina.

You know, i hate it when little information (well, relevant and interesting information) is provided about some places....or am i too lazy too google for more again?

Goran says that the sky over there isnt as blue as on the postcard, and that its been raining every single day....well, i can totally relate to that, coz the weather has been awful here as well...extremely cold for this time of yer (at the time of writing this its just 8 degrees, and its still SEPTEMBER!) and even during the days i need to wear warm clothes (sweaters and jackets) which as far as i can recall, hasnt happened, coz ive been wearing camisoles in October...so this is really insane!

Gorane, hvala ti puno na iznenadzenju! Stvarno si me prijatno iznenadio i obradovao! ;-)

Dubrovnik, Croatia

A very old card, given to me by one of my mum's late friends.....i cant possibly identify the date, coz the one who sent it didnt date the card, and the cancellation is veeeery pale....well, its definitely an old card, thats for sure

I was in Dubrovnik when i was little...during our summers we spent in Croatia, we also went to Dubrovnik once.
Well, frankly, i dont have some splendid memories about it...as a historic place, Dubrovnik will amaze you...as a touristic spot, not really...and having in mind i was just a child when i went there, what do you think i preferred...historic places or somewhere i can have fun and enjoy?
There was also another family with us..the man was a friend of my dad....i cant recall if we arranged it from here to meet there or what...i know i didnt like it....they had a boy and a girl my age...both somewhat spoilt....i felt them as a threat and competition....esp. the boy....coz of the attention he got from my dad and how they two 'hung out'.....
The greatest percentage of the memories is way too vague and blurred....but i keep having this feeling that something bad happened as well....some kind of an accident....i just cant recall what it was...as if we the kids had done something, and then we had to report it to our parents...and how i was both terrified and ashamed....i can recall the feelings...i cant possibly recall why....i keep getting the image of the hotel lounge...and i keep having the feeling as if someone broke something....but im actually just rambling now...trying to make out some sense....
