Santon Station, Isle of Man

Well, one more card in this update since, a post about Chris wouldnt be a post about Chris without an Isle of Man card.

I can say that like 90% of my IoM cards are thanks to Chris. And magically he often manages to find ones with trains too :)

This one shows the Santon railway station which is a request stop near Newtown in the parish of Santon; it forms part of the sole remaining line of the Isle of Man Railway which once encompassed over 46 miles of network and retains its original station building.
The halt sometimes plays host to Santa's Grotto each December as part of the railway's Santa Trains service although between 2010 and 2013 it was not utilised for this purpose.

and look at these stamps!!
Gonna require some work to cover them all but that's the purpose of this blog, isn't it? :)

Starting from top left first is a ship from a set of 6 issued in 1980, commemorating the 150th Anniversary of "Isle of Man Steam Packet Company". Next to it is one from a set of 4 issued in 1974, commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of Sir Winston Churchill. The third one in the row is from a set of four issued in 1981 for The Royal British lLegion Diamond Jubilee, 1921-1981.

The bottom row starts with a stamp issued in 1978 in a set of 5 representing buildings and this one shows the Tower of Refuge. Next to it is one from a set of two issued in 1975, under the title New Values and the last one is from 1978 from a set of four stamps commemorating the 60th Anniversary of the Royal Air Force.

So, I believe that would be all for today. What a productive day, my oh my :D

A huge huge thank you to Chris for all these cards, and the bunch of others still not uploaded, and a huge thank you also to his wife Julie, who always participates in the sending of cards and signing them as well!

To all who celebrated Easter yesterday, Happy Easter! To all who will celebrate it next weekend, Happy Easter as well!

Till next time...

Isle of Man

*cough cough cough* what a great map card, eh? :)))))

And from such a rare country...here is my first received Isle of Man postcard...but this second one is so special since it is actually written and stamped and mailed from Isle of Man itself! I feel so happy and proud :P

Isle of Man is located in the Irish Sea between the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. The head of state is Queen Elizabeth II, who holds the title of Lord of Mann. The island is not part of the United Kingdom, but its foreign relations and defence are the responsibility of the UK Government. The island has been inhabited since before 6500 BC. It began to be influenced by Gaelic culture in the AD 400s and the Manx language, a branch of the Gaelic languages, gradually emerged. In the 800s, the Norse began to settle there. A Norse-Gaelic culture emerged and the island came under Norse control. In 1266, the island became part of Scotland. After a period of alternating rule by the kings of Scotland and England, the island came under the feudal overlordship of the English Crown in 1399. The lordship revested into the British Crown in 1764 but the island never became part of the United Kingdom and retained its status as an internally self-governing jurisdiction.
Mann is not a part of the European Union, but has a limited relationship concerning the free movement of goods.

for those who dont know exactly where Isle of Man is:

the stamp on the card is from a set of 6 issued this year, representing the Ford Model T. This is the 1923 7 cwt Van

Port Erin, Isle of Man

I was supposed to do other stuff....but I totally overslept....consequence of a day-to-day lack of sleep....sooner or later it catches up with you...well, i have still tonz of work to do, but at this point Im really not into it...and yeah, its been over 10 days since my last post....will get down to that bit later....lets not spoil my new country :)
Isle of Man....when i first heard about it (and i did so only when i joined postcrossing), I totally mis-translated into it...that is, I translated the word "Man" too literally.....even though as a linguist, i am SUPPOSED to know that you DONT translate names of countries and such....
This card is just really great, not only for being my first from the Isle of Man, but also, it has a picture of a train on it, and if im not mistaken, on the picture in the top right corner, thats a lighthouse...well, it looks like that, and thats a natural place for a lighthouse to be....but maybe some local could confirm it just to make sure...
As for Port Erin, its situated in the southern part of the Island...meaning "The Iron Port" or "Lord's Port"....
Ok....I just found it....that is NOT a lighthouse but a tower...the Milner's Tower....well, there is quite a story behind it, as well as regarding the railway museum on the island (the locomotive you see is called No.11 Maitland)...I really hope to receive single-view cards from these places so i could get into an in-depth monologue about them :P

Thanks a million to Andy for sending me this one!
