Virginia City, Nevada

btw, today is a public holiday here, the Revolution day...and all the time I keep thinking it is Saturday, when it is actually Thursday..which also unfortunately means, no mail today =/

my next card came as another surprise from dear Maggie, a great cemetery card!

Virginia City's cemeteries date back to the 1860's. These hand-carved headstones mark the graves of the men, women, and children whose lives were often shortened by the difficult conditions of the Comstock era.
Btw, Virginia City is one of the oldest established communities in Nevada and can be considered the "birthplace" of Mark Twain.
It is a census-designated place (CDP) that is the county seat of Storey County, Nevada.
Its population was 855 according to the 2010 census. that's not much actually...not at all...

the stamp on the right was issued this year in a set of 5 stamps showing birds-of-prey (this one shows the osprey. The other one is a definitive stamp issued in 2011, showing the portrait of George Washington.

thank you so much Maggie!

I have not been to Virginia City, Nevada for many years but it, like many other old Western cities of our historic gold and silver discovery days are absolutely fascinating. There is another Virginia City in Montana I visited last year. It is a short drive from Yellowstone National Park and also is a riveting example of our old and very wild west!
